Over the years Pixar has achieved numerous major victories. The animation studio’s success and longevity can be attributed in part to the creatives behind the films, but also to the visionaries who know when it’s time to return for a sequel. Sequels are part of the studio’s bread and butter, but not every creation gets one. Fans are clamoring for a sequel Ratatouille to no avail. The film’s director just revealed why a sequel never happened and probably never will.
Brad Bird doesn’t think there is a story left for Remy
Brad Bird is the mastermind behind it Ratatouille. The famed director recently spoke openly about the legacy of the famous animated film and how fans have reacted to the lack of a Remy sequel. In a conversation with ColliderBird said Pixar has floated the idea of a return to the kitchen, but has passed on it every time. Vogel claims that Ratatouille is one of the films he directed that was finished when the credits rolled.
The director noted that just because a film resonates with an audience doesn’t automatically mean a sequel is necessary. He has been selective about the sequels he chooses to entertain throughout his career. While he’s signed up for some, he’s just not there when it counts Ratatouille. Bird believes the story has been told and there is nothing left to return to. While it feels natural to want more, Bird’s point lands given the beloved nature of the film. Ratatouille ends with Remy, Linguini and Colette running a new restaurant together called La Ratatouille, where rats work in a hidden kitchen upstairs and humans dine downstairs. While technically a second film could follow that journey, it would likely be too similar to the original.
Patton Oswalt is not against returning
While Brad Bird is completely against the idea of delving back into Remy’s life on the big screen, voice actor Patton Oswalt is not. Oswalt, which fans probably remember The King of Queensvoiced Remy for the 2007 film and has sung its praises ever since.
During a podcast appearance, Oswalt said he would like to voice Remy again Ratatouille 2 have ever been made. His announcement came with one major caveat, however. Oswalt said he wasn’t interested in a “cash grab.” The actor revealed that he would only return if the story felt authentic and important. Since Bird has no interest in creating a new storyline, it seems like that dream won’t come true.
While Bird’s reasoning makes a lot of sense, we can understand why Oswalt and the production studio would be interested in returning for a second run. Ratatouille was both a critical and commercial success and deserved five Oscar nominations and winning best animated film. The film grossed over $623 million worldwide, exceeding its $150 million budget several times over. Remy is still a fixture for the Disney brand, appearing in parks and projects. The beloved rat even has a special ride at Disneyland Paris and Epcot in Florida. By almost any standard, it looks like top-notch sequel material. Still, Pixar probably wants Bird’s buy-in first, and they’re just not going to get that.
