Malia Ann Obama has established himself as a filmmaker! The 27-year-old daughter of the former president Barak Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama made headlines in 2024 when she made her debut short film at the Sundance Film Festival. Her decision to drops her famous last name at the event led to extensive discussions on social media and within the industry. Although some were surprised to see the young star make an appearance on the rare red carpet, she has been making a name for herself in Hollywood for a few years now.

According to Malia IMDb profile is the Harvard graduate writer and director. Her first notable screenwriting credit was for Donald Glover‘s 2023 series Swarm. According to her biography, she contributed to seven episodes. Per showrunner Janine Naberssome of Malia’s creative pitches were “wild as hell, and they were just so good and so funny. She’s an incredible writer. She brought a lot to the table… She’s really, really dedicated to her craft.”
She then wrote her short film, The heartwhich premiered at Sundance in Park City, Utah in early 2024.

“If she knows she’s an Obama, why do you care?” Whoopi asked the naysayers during an episode of her talk show. “Why do you care what she calls herself? If she wants to call herself Jeanette MacDonald, she has the right to do so! If I can be Whoopi Goldberg, she can be whoever she wants to be.”
The Color Purple star added, “I mean, why are people triggered by things like this? Why are people wasting their time? This is a grown woman. She’s not thinking about her parents. … Leave this child alone. Leave her alone.”

Michelle and Barack have not publicly responded to the criticism their daughter received for omitting her last name as a filmmaker. However, the proud parents have spoken about their children – Malia and Sasha – over the years.
During a 2023 conversation on her ‘The Light Podcast’, Michelle talked about how her communication with her children has changed.
“I’m moving from head mother to head advisor,” she says. “That’s a beautiful thing — to be able to see my girls fly and have the relief of, ‘Okay, I guess I didn’t screw them up.'”
