Maybe I’m wrong, but I think the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s team sent out a detailed update on their July trip to the UK on Friday afternoon. “Friday Afternoon” is basically an awkward moment of confirming the biggest royal story of the summer, which is that Prince Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lily will be visiting the UK in just a few weeks. My theory? The Sussexes already knew that the Mail’s Alison Boshoff was going to publish an exclusive about the UK trip, and they were like “Enough of this nonsense, let’s move on to his story.” Just hours later, the Mail published this Boshoff exclusive, filled with quotes from “sources close to Harry.” However those sources are clearly Windsor or Windsor-adjacent. So, here are some of the highlights of the story the Sussexes wanted to hide:
Why would the Sussexes want to visit the UK?!? For all the chatter last week, no one seemed able to explain what Harry and Meghan would do here beyond launching the run-up to next year’s Invictus Games: where they might stay, who they might see, and whether they would bring a photographer or camera crew with them. In short, what is the broader strategic objective of Sussex? What do they want to achieve? Those questions can now be answered to a great extent. And they reveal the seeds of a post-Megxit future that, if it comes to fruition, could have historic personal and institutional significance for the royal family. Because, as a source close to Harry told me, this trip is nothing less than the first phase of Operation Reconciliation, a carefully thought-out plan to heal the wounds between Harry and his family.
What Harry wants: It appears that the prince is determined to ensure that he and his wife proceed with caution during their visit here. Clearly, he is desperate not to stoke the embers of bad feeling between him and the royals. I’m told he’s also hoping to meet Meghan and Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, brother William, as well as Kate and their children. However, first and foremost, Harry is aiming to fully re-establish his relationship with his father – friends say it is likely that the Sussexes are planning to live at Sandringham. This tour will be completely private. No cameras, no upcoming Instagram posts, no revelations in interviews thereafter.
Here’s what sources close to Harry are telling Alison Boshoff: A source close to Harry told me: ‘Charles has told him he’s really looking forward to seeing his grandchildren. Harry is looking forward to this journey and building bridges. Everyone wants this. It was decided months ago that he would come with the children and also with Meghan. A friend of Harry’s said, ‘Talks started in January. Harry said he wanted to accompany Meghan and the children to Invictus and offered that the palace could support them. The idea was that they had to ensure that the entire family part of the trip remained private. He agreed to it in a heartbeat. The way he has conducted himself since then has instilled confidence in this new version of Harry. That has changed a lot (since Megxit). He has grown up.
Rejection of the Sussexes’ half-hearted proposal in 2020: A source close to Harry said: ‘He and Meghan were hurt by the family’s reaction. He realized that when they came to him proposing a new way of working his response was, ‘Don’t let the door hit you on your way out.’
new plan!! Now, according to Harry’s friends, a new idea has taken hold under which he and Meghan would be free to jam for money and give speeches when in the US, but would be treated as senior members of the royal family when in Britain. The price of this is the assurance that there will be no commercial activity upon arrival. At least, that’s the new ‘deal’ as Harry sees it, and he’s keen to abide by the terms come July 6. A source close to the prince said: ‘Harry is determined to play it straight off the bat, by which I mean there will be no business activity around this trip – that goes for him and Meghan.’ The source says Harry believes the royal family’s stance on commercial activity has changed significantly – not on everything, but there is a recognition in senior circles of the court that activities are different in the UK and the US. There is some acceptance that in Britain he can function as a semi-functioning royal as long as there is nothing business going on here. In America, he is a hired gun and can take money. He wouldn’t do that in Britain.
US-UK divide: Harry obviously doesn’t think it completely overrules the terms of Megxit, but he is optimistic it could allow him and his family to move on from the outcome of the Sandringham summit, which has only sowed toxicity. Their supporters argue that there is precedent for the UK-US split and that the royals have always been allowed to make money in the US. This more nuanced situation appears to have been made possible through gentle diplomacy by some of the king’s advisors. Harry’s supporters say former diplomat Theo Rycroft, deputy to the king’s private secretary, Sir Clive Alderton, is more amenable to making peace than Alderton and other advisers. Harry’s friend revealed: ‘There is very close coordination between their teams. This is a planned visit which is the result of that good working relationship.
No Netflix!! California-born Lilibet is believed to have met the king only once, on the Sussexes’ UK visit around the platinum jubilee in 2022. On that occasion, Harry and Meghan released a photo of their daughter enjoying her first birthday at Frogmore Cottage. This spread anger. The source said: ‘It was very far from where the royal family wanted to be, seeing family moments commercialized and thinking they could come on Netflix.’
Divisive Mag: As far as Meghan is concerned, she remains a deeply divisive figure in both the family and the country. The source said, ‘Meghan is a little nervous about how she will be received. ‘They understand that the British people feel as if he has taken Harry away from them and there was natural disappointment with the way things turned out, but there are hopes of breaking the ice here.’
Scooter King Status: However, Harry’s friend says there is a WhatsApp group through which Prince Harry shares family news and photos with the wider royal family. The friend also makes the extraordinary claim that Harry hopes to meet William and his family. ‘The feeling among his friends is that Harry is likely to stay at Sandringham and have a number of informal meetings with the wider family and, yes, those will include William. As mentioned, they do not hate each other. Are they tired of each other’s attitude in this situation? Yes. Are they mindful of how others will react? Then, yes. But there is a lot of hope that a civil meeting can be held in a few weeks. Many years have passed and everyone has grown old. He adds, ‘Their wives may have to gnash their teeth.’
(from Daily Mail)
The funniest thing is that the palace apparently threw several tantrums at the idea of Meghan “stirring up the jam” or updating her oneoff account on British soil. Oh my God, will the sheds at Buckingham Palace be polluted by JAM like this?? While we make fun of Prince William’s tantrums and Kensington Palace clown show venting anger on the Sussexes, the truth is that King Charles and his courtiers have been in a complete panic over Meghan’s Instagram for the past year. Speaking of, BP is where Boshoff’s sources came from. These “sources close to Harry” are all Charles’s people. I can tell – the main point of BP’s conversation is this forced perspective “But what does Harry actually hope to achieve by doing A, B and C?” Whenever Harry and Meghan go somewhere or do something big, the palace puts those talking points into their rota WhatsApp. This comes as BP is publicly announcing its terms during a visit to the Sussexes. I fully expect Meghan to update her one-offs throughout the trip.
