Athlete ‘tragically lost her life in an accident’ during family holiday abroad: RIP to Jemma Stapleton


A 25-year-old athlete dies after a tragic crash.

News recently broke of the death of Jemma Stapleton, with a GoFundMe and noted that she “tragically lost her life in an accident while abroad with her family.” Police have now released preliminary details about what happened.

Stapleton, a runner who was recently a finalist in Australia’s famous Stawell Gift running competition, died on June 10 while visiting Koh Samui, Thailand. According to police statements to ThaiExaminer.comshe was riding a motorcycle on a winding highway in rainy conditions when she apparently lost control of the vehicle.

Two cars were also involved in the crash, but authorities have not released more specific details about how the crash unfolded.

After a death, loved ones organized a fundraiser for Stapleton’s family. The public raised over $103,440 AUD for charity.

Numerous athletic organizations have issued statements about the beloved runner’s death, including the Victorian Athletic League. VAL has even gone so far coverage of grief counseling for Stapleton colleagues during this difficult time.

“Jemma was a valued member of our community whose presence, character and contributions had a lasting impact on those around her,” the VAL statement said in part. “On behalf of everyone at the Victorian Athletic League, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Jemma.”
