TRNSMT to kick off in the scorching heat as fans desperately wait for Lewis Capaldi


There was only one name on the lips of most of the festivalgoers today, with Lewis ready to end TRNSMT on a high note.

Reece, a window cleaner, said: “We came here today because we couldn’t afford to come all weekend. We just went to Bongo’s Bingo with a drag queen and people in cow costumes and it was a good laugh. We’d never experienced that before.”

Leigh-Anne, who runs a care company, said: “We’re just here today. And it’s all for Lewis. Obviously I would have come for the whole weekend if I could, but I’ve got to look after all the elderly people.”

The girls spent their day at the Budweiser Bar. Leigh Anne said: “We’re standing at the forefront of the Budweiser stage, giving it a thumbs up.” Laura said: “Now we’re actually going to get our friends to the gate.”

During the afternoon and evening, there was a relaxed, calm atmosphere on Glasgow Green, with festival goers wandering among the stages, food stalls and friends while the music played.

And food, as always, played its part. Ice lollies were passed around in the heat, while queues formed for chips, cheese, salt and chilli chicken, pizza and fish and chips.

It’s been a weekend where the soundtrack matters most, but the festival atmosphere helped keep everyone energetic as the crowd remained steady for long periods of time.

On the first day of the three-day event, Richard Ashcroft delivered one of the standout sets of the weekend, helping to set the tone ahead of Cammy Barnes, Flowers of Scotland and Friday’s Scotland-Morocco match.

Throughout the festival the atmosphere changed with the weather, but not with the mood. Even when the skies were a little hazy, the crowd remained enthusiastic, determined to make the most of the return of live music on such a large scale.

There were also some surprise appearances behind the scenes, when Paolo Nutini joined the festivities under the guise of a Scotland bucket hat on Friday, enjoying the action from the VIP area without any of the fuss.

They sampled some strawberry daiquiris during the day, taking the opportunity to mingle and even thank a male vendor with a kiss on the cheek for his hospitality.

On Saturday, as the weather cleared and Kasabian’s set time approached in the evening, The Snuts enjoyed some fish and frites backstage. By Sunday, the final day, the crowd was in its element.
