A young woman in Brazil tragically lost her life over the weekend due to a catastrophic safety failure during a bungee jumping excursion. Officials and witnesses say it was a catastrophic security failure. And adding another heartbreaking layer to an already horrifying incident, the terrifying moment was captured on video by spectators who watched the jump.

According to several Brazilian news outlets, witnesses say that Maria Eduarda was carried towards the edge of the bridge by employees of a bungee jumping company before being thrown over the edge. But almost immediately, something appeared to be terribly wrong: footage circulated on social media reportedly showed onlookers realizing that the safety rope had been left behind rather than attached to the young woman before she jumped.

A witness filming the incident reportedly pointed to the rope still lying on the ground and screamed in alarm when the reality of the situation became clear.

Officials say Maria Eduarda fell about 40 meters, or about 131 feet. Emergency responders, including a police helicopter, were dispatched to the scene, but tragically he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The loss has sent shockwaves through the community and those who knew him. Maria Eduarda had recently graduated in physical education and sports management and had reportedly purchased a guided tour package that included jumping off an abandoned bridge – but what was intended as a celebration has now turned tragic.
