Rory McIlroy was ravaged at the US Open in New York.
Rory McIlroy finished well from the lead on US Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club this weekend. The Northern Irishman shot +6 over his last two days. He couldn’t wait to go New York.
McIlroy admitted as much after finishing his final round. The pitch knocked him down. The crowd added to his pain.
McIlroy has a history with fans in the area. He got into it with patrons last year at the Ryder Cup in Bethpage, Long Island.
Rory has been on all day after the fan incident earlier.
Pointed to the scoreboard as he went to 15.

At one point he said that to the fans “shut up” after being brutally hardened. However, that case was a little different.
It was Europe vs. USA. The crowd would always be against him since it was on American soil. While the contestants may have crossed the line, the reaction was somewhat expected.
That was not necessarily the case for US Open. McIlroy didn’t anticipate that type of raucous atmosphere, and for the most part, he was right.
US Open crowds were small until the final round.
No one showed up in the first three days of play. Travel costs and logistics played a big role. Empty seats swarmed the venue as each round ended.
Things changed on Sunday. The crowd was lively for the last round. Most attendees exhausted their energy booing eventual champion Wyndham Clark with whom he struggled in a relationship fan favorite Scottie Scheffler.
Rory McIlroy also attracted negative attention.

McIlroy was ravaged on at least one tee box. He playfully responded with the fan.
With that said, he couldn’t finish his Sunday round fast enough. It had less to do with the fans and more to do with his play on a difficult course.
Rory McIlroy finished badly.
He actually sat at -2 through his front nine on Saturday. From there he fell off the leaderboard and well out of contention for a big win.
McIlroy bogeyed five times on the back nine in Round 3. He added four more on the front nine on Sunday.
While he was able to finish -1 on his final nine holes, the deficit proved too deep to dig out of. Here’s what he had to say after the tournament.
‘I think it won the battle for me’ 🗣️

“(The course) won the battle for me at this point,” he said. “I shot myself out of the tournament (on Saturday)… Saw a couple of bogeys on the front nine and I tried to drive my way to the 18th green.”
The finish was disappointing for McIlroy after a hot start. Hecklers added insult to injury, though he seemed to take it in stride.
With the third major now completed, attention will turn to the British Open in July. He probably isn’t eager to return to New York just yet.
