The volleyball community is mourning the loss of former NCAA standout and coach Summer Nash, who was found dead in the Pacific Ocean at the age of 34.
Authorities confirmed that Nash’s body was found off the coast of San Diego, while investigators continue to work to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Former NCAA volleyball player identified
According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, a woman’s body was discovered floating in the Pacific Ocean on June 18 near the 5000 block of Newport Avenue, near the Ocean Beach Pier.
The victim was later identified as Summer Nash, a former collegiate volleyball player who competed for both San Diego State University and Florida International University.
Officials have not yet released a cause of death and the investigation remains ongoing.
Dedicated his life to the sport
After her collegiate playing career, Nash remained deeply involved in volleyball by transitioning into coaching.
She worked with numerous respected programs throughout Southern California including Tamarack Beach Volleyball Club, Torrey Pines High School, MiraCosta College, San Diego State University and WAVE Beach Volleyball Club.
Over the years, she became known for helping develop young athletes while remaining active in the beach volleyball community.

Former coach pays emotional tribute
Nash’s former coach, Coach Deitre, shared a heartfelt message following the tragic news.
“Heartbroken to hear of the passing of my former player, Summer Nash,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Summer was an exceptional talent on the volleyball court, but what I will remember most is the person she was. She had a beautiful spirit, a kind heart and a presence that made those around her better. She was truly a special soul.”
She went on to express her condolences to Nash’s family, friends and former teammates, adding that she will be remembered and deeply missed.

The investigation continues
At this time, authorities have not announced what caused Nash’s death.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
