DJ Fatboy Slim, real name Norman Quentin Cook, has been sober for almost 15 years, and has spoken openly about the role of Zoe Ball in his recovery and admitted that giving up alcohol was “probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done”.

Cook, who sought treatment for alcohol addiction in 2009, said he has been sober for almost 15 years now, but he described addiction as something one constantly struggles to survive.
“It’s like a parasite,” he explained. “It protects itself. It knows that if you leave it, it will have no place to live, so it will do something to keep you.”
The chart-topping producer, whose full name is Norman Quentin Cook, said the turning point came when his then-wife, broadcaster Zoe Ball, quietly warned that she would leave him if he did not stop drinking.
“That was my moment of awakening,” he recalled. “There were a lot of people yelling at me at first, but in the end it was whispered very softly.”
Recalling the final months before seeking help, Cook admitted that alcohol had ceased to give him any pleasure as his personal life began to unravel. While in rehab, he realized that he had sought help “just in time”, but he stressed that recovery is nothing short of easy.
When asked if it was easy to stay calm, he said, “No, not at all.” “It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I couldn’t have done it without rehab.”
He credited the treatment program for confronting him with the reality of his addiction, and said: “I needed someone to beat me over the head for a month. You know, ‘You’re going to die, and you’re going to be in misery if you don’t stop doing this.’
Although rehab marked the beginning of his recovery, Cook admitted that his confidence disappeared when it came to performing without alcohol. He said that his early shows were dominated by fear, leaving him unable to relax or even dance behind the decks.
He said, “During the first five shows, I was so paralyzed and stiff with fear that I couldn’t dance and I couldn’t enjoy it.”
Instead of losing himself in the music, Cook forced himself to overthink every decision, questioning which record to play next and how the audience would react. He finally found his confidence during what he described as “the beautiful night in Japan”, where the enthusiasm of the crowd reminded him that his role was only to make people happy.
“Everything fits into its place,” he said.

When he joined his first band, Cook decided it was the perfect opportunity to start again.
“I grew up with a flamboyant, unusual name, and I really wanted a normal name. So Normal Norman seemed like a great name to have.”
