During their audition, Madelyn and Malachi shared that they are friends who have been performing together for six months. Residents of Benton, Tennessee, Madelyn works as a waitress at a family-run restaurant called Big Tom’s, while Malachi works full-time at a Beryllium copper company and is married with a 10-month-old son.
Under their America’s Got Talent audition, Madelyn and Malachi performed a country version of “Counting Stars” by OneRepublic, with Madelyn singing and playing guitar and Malachi playing banjo. After the audition, judge Simon Cowell gushed that he thought they were so authentic and genuine. He told Madelyn that her voice was amazing and that she and Malachi had great chemistry together. Simon loved their song choices and ended by saying he really liked them both.
Judge Howie Mandell, however, was less impressed. He told Madelyn that he loved her voice, but because she and Malachi had only been performing together for six months and it was new, he thought the act didn’t seem ready. He compared it to a meal that was not finished yet. Simon replied that he thought it was just the opposite, and judge Sofia Vergara agreed. He explained that when people find each other and see their potential, they should work together immediately.
Judge Mel B. understood Howie’s point of view, but told Madelyn and Malachi that she liked what they said about being hard workers, adding that they were very talented. In the end, they got three yes votes from Sofia, Simon and Mel B., but Howie gave them a no, telling them to polish their act and get it ready to come back next season. Madelyn and Malachi advanced to next round of America’s Got Talent season 21, determined to impress all the judges next time.
America’s Got Talent contestant Madelyn Tallent was surprised by the friendly backstage atmosphere
In an interview with Gino D on The afternoon show on Hits 96 before her and Malachi’s episode aired, Madelyn revealed what surprised her the most America’s Got Talent audition process. she said “I’ll just say the environment. I expected things to be more hostile than they were among other contestants. But like I said, I met really nice people. And I met friends that I still talk to on a daily basis.”
Earlier in the interview, Madelyn had explained that although America’s Got Talent is a competition, she and Malachi made some really good friends while waiting backstage to perform. She said they are still talking to Lara D, who got a Golden Buzzer from Sofia earlier this season. Madelyn said it was “really cool” to befriend other people who looked like her and Malachi.
Madelyn Tallent was impressed by the different types of America’s Got Talent Acts
Madelyn also shared that she was impressed with the different types actors who auditioned for America’s Got Talent season 21 with her and Malachi. she said “Just the different types of talent that are there. As a singer, you kind of get wrapped up in your singing act and then other singing acts.”
Madelyn continued, “But then you look around and you realize, ‘Okay, we’ve got magicians. We’ve got contortionists.’ Like there’s all kinds of talent … So it’s just really cool to like … I don’t know … I don’t know if I expected to look around the room and have a realization like, “Oh, I’m among some of the most talented people in the world right now.”
It is beautiful to hear from Madelyn America’s Got Talent has such a friendly backstage atmosphere. Plus, Madelyn is right that the variety of talent on the show is what makes it so special. Her and Malachi’s episode alone featured several singers, including Mackenzie Sol, who received the last of Mel B’s two Golden Buzzers, but also mentalists James & Marina, aerialist and swordsman Herwan Legaillard, one-legged parkour artist Rubén Roldán Bustos, who received the last of Simon’s two Golden Breakers, who received the last of Simon’s two Golden Breakers Recorder, Mr. show, and the dancer Patrox, who danced in reverse.
Even though Howie had his doubts about Madelyn and Malachi, he should trust Simon’s judgment when it comes to finding country music stars. After all, when Simon was one American Idol judge in 2005, he predicted that Carrie Underwood would not only win Season 4, but that she would sell more records than any previous winner. Simon’s prediction came true and Carrie is now one of the most legendary country music superstars of all time. While Madelyn and Malachi are just getting started, Simon’s faith in them is a great sign that they’re headed for great things, and America’s Got Talent is just the beginning for them.
