Beyond Shania TwainGlitter and glam was a battle that no one knew about until today.
The Canadian singer-songwriter poured her heart out in a new interview, revealing that she went through an emotionally draining period during her 2019 Las Vegas stint.
Shania Twain is no stranger to speaking out about her issues, often pushing for body positivity and embracing aging with grace.

Twain poured her heart out in a new interview, sharing how 2019 had been one of the most challenging moments of her life. The singer’s stay in Las Vegas became almost a tale of horror after she desperately tried to lose weight to regain her former glory.
According to Twain, her body had changed in ways she could not accept and admitted that she did not like her appearance at the time. Twain’s disgust with her own body was so bad that she could no longer stand her reflection in the mirror. She told The Times:
“I stopped looking at myself in the mirror. I hated my body. I’m like, ‘Oh, I can’t stand this changing body.’ But it was so unhealthy.”
The singer tried to lose weight using ‘unhealthy’ methods

Twain explained that she hadn’t done anything different in her usual routine, but her body began to change as she got older. The transformation took a toll on her mental health, making Twain more self-conscious about her appearance and determined to lose weight.
She recalled pushing her body to the limit and doing “very unhealthy things” to regain her confidence. “I worked my body more than I fed it to keep up with the strain,” Twain said of her attempts to slim down, adding that she eventually paid the price.
Twain’s actions left her body “malnourished”, which in turn caused her to suffer injuries while performing on stage. Fortunately, she no longer feels disappointed by her appearance and credits menopause with changing her perspective and helping her understand that some things are out of her control.
The Grammy winner is ‘comfortable’ in her own skin

The interview wasn’t the first time Twain had credited menopause for changing her views, previously sharing similar sentiments in 2022. At the time, she surprised fans by going topless for a new single, “Waking Up Dreaming.”
Twain addressed her decision to go topless while speaking PEOPLEand said, “This is me expressing my truth. I’m comfortable in my own skin and this is the way I share that confidence.” Noting that as a woman in her late 50s, she didn’t need to hide behind clothes, adding:
“I can’t even tell you how good it felt to shoot naked. I was just so shameless about my new body, you know, like a woman well into menopause.”
The entertainer learned to embrace her aging body

Twain noted that it felt “liberating” after going through menopause and accepting her body’s transformation with age. She recalled being hesitant to take off her top because her curves were no longer as “full as they used to be.”
Such depressing thoughts did not last long in Twain’s mind as she refused to allow her confidence to wane. She remembered thinking that she should not let her courage fade and chose to embrace her aging body. These thoughts prompted Twain to go topless for her single’s cover art.
“I don’t want to be shy about it. I want to be brave about it, and I want to share that courage in the artwork that I direct,” Twain said. She has always chosen bold ideas for her music, going braless and baring her midriff for her debut music video “What Made You Say That” in 1993.
Shania Twain revealed her childhood trauma

In addition to opening up about her body image issues, Twain has been vocal about her dark past. The explosion reported in March 2025 that Twain had shared how her body image was connected to her childhood trauma.
The “You’re Still the One” hitmaker admitted she felt insecure about her body from a young age because she had been “touched inappropriately so many times.” Twain claimed that she had been in many abusive situations, which in turn led her to hate herself for being a woman.
Twain admitted that she even had thoughts of becoming a “big, strong man that nobody wanted to mess with,” and told her mother of her plans to become a bodybuilder as a child. She also recalled hating her curvy body because she grew up at a time when being “very, very thin” was associated with “elegance and feminine beauty.”
