Depending on how much it is, you get restaurant bill can make or break the night. But one customer was amazed after noticing one unusual charge at their expense.

In some ways, this is not so uncommon. In the past, BroBible has reported on customers who have had to pay for other diners’ meals or, in the case of Chick-fil-A, pay what is known as a “public improvement fee.”

But this example of an additional cost really pushes things to the limit. The TikTok, which was posted by the account @kerchmagic, consists of a picture of a restaurant bill. A “house fee” is listed at the bottom of the bill.

According to the bill, a “house fee” includes security, music, health insurance, salary increase and taxes. It appears to be charged as 5% of the rather large bill. That means guests were expected to pay a whopping $79.51.

TikTok has accumulated 779,500 views. BroBible reached out to @kerchmagic via TikTok direct message.

What did the commentators say about the restaurant bill?

On the whole, commentators were rather unimpressed by this accusation.

“Looks like there will be no tipping as restaurants charge for all the things tipping usually pays for,” wrote one.

“Big party tax,” remarked another. “Restaurants charge you for giving them too much business.” They followed up their comment with a crying-laughing emoji.

“Why is no one talking about the 39% tip that is automatically added?” asked a third.

While a fourth noted: “Making $500 an hour to bring food and drinks to a table is crazy.”

However, other commentators were on the restaurant’s side.

“You want to be mad at restaurants before you’re mad at billionaires for exploiting workers,” commented a fifth.

In total, the customer had to pay $2,372.07.

As a result, a sixth said: “Complaining about how much the charges were on a meal that costs more than most people pay in rent is definitely a choice.”

Has this happened before?

As it turns out, charging music to your restaurant bill is not an unusual practice. In a now-deleted Reddit post (via Heart radio), a Redditor shared a photo of the restaurant bill his girlfriend got.

The bill, which was split between four people, included an $8 fee each for live music. This added up to a total of $32.

In response to this Reddit post, users were divided.

One Redditor said it “sounds like someone couldn’t afford live music and foot the bill for the customers.”

Another asked: “Why do people go out anymore?”

But other users defended the restaurant.

“We did this at a restaurant I worked at,” said this Redditor. “We had music every night and the menu said there was an $8 cover charge per person when music was played. The money went directly to the musician(s). No one ever complained, the key had signs everywhere.”

In the end, it’s not clear whether the music mentioned on the original TikTok account was live or not. But still, it seems a better way is to be more upfront about music costs.
