The Egypt national team secured their very first World Cup win on Sunday evening with a 3-1 victory over New Zealand. The win puts Egypt on four points after two games, which puts them at the top of their group and should be enough to see them through to the knockout rounds.

After the victory, the Egyptian national team was led by team captain Mohammed Salahwho scored the go-ahead goal and picked up an assist on his way to being named Player of the Match, took to the streets of Vancouver to celebrate with their fans after the historic win.

Through the first two games of the group stage, Salah – a free agent after completing the final year of his contract with Liverpool – has already contributed three goals: two assists and a goal.

“It’s incredible. I don’t know how to put it into words. It’s a great achievement for all the players, for the staff, so hopefully we can continue like this in the group, and we can make history and qualify – and in the years to come it will be remembered as one of the best performances in the history (of Egyptian football). We have to enjoy today, enjoy tomorrow, and then concentrate on the next match.” Salah said after the win.

In the current 48-team World Cup format, the top eight third-place teams qualify for the knockout stages (the Round of 32). With four points on the board, Egypt has probably qualified for the knockouts. If they beat Iran on matchday three, they will win their group. The winner of Group G will play the third place from Group A, E, H, I or J on Wednesday, July 1 in Seattle.
