An early blown play early in Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees gives us a chance to look inside the current Polymarket opportunities.
In the first inning of the game against the Cincinnatti Reds, the current American top team seemed to have pulled off an excellent double play, but no outs were called.

The Reds’ Blake Dunn was at first base with JJ Bleday batting. Bleday hit a line drive directly up the middle and right off Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe. The infielder hung on to the ball, stepped to second base as a precaution and then lobbed the ball to first base to eliminate Dunn, who did not have time to retreat to first base in time.
YES Network broadcasters called the lucky break a double play, with Yankee great Paul O’Neill telling a story about “the breaks of the game.” However, the home plate umpire quickly called catcher interference on the play.

Yankee catcher Austin Wells — who comes fresh from the IL – extended his glove too far in front of him and Bleday’s bat collided with it. According to MLB rules, the game is dead when that contact is made and the batter takes first base.
“What a change in events here,” O’Neill said quickly as he realized Wells had blown the doubles match. Michael Kay described the moment as “a big blow to the Yankees,” putting rookie starting pitcher Elmer Rodríguez in a “tough situation.”
How the Catcher’s Inference Affected the Polymarket
A big mess like this would scare some gamblers on Polymarket. The odds were already fairly even before the game started, thanks to Rodríguez’s unexpected inclusion in the Bronx Bombers’ rotation.

Goals were needed to increase Polymarket’s chances shift drastically. A solo home run by New York first baseman Ben Rice increased the team’s chances of winning to 70%. However, Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson hit a 3-run dinger in the fourth inning, giving the Ohio team the lead. At the time of writing, Polymarket gives the Reds a 68% chance of winning the game, which is currently in the fifth inning.
Even if the Yankees don’t play at their best on Sunday, Polymarket still believes in it they will win the AL East and eliminate all other American League teams in the playoffs. (The Dodgers are still the favorites to win the World Series, however.)
