Where House of the Dragon’s Story Left Off: House Targaryen at War

House of the Dragon takes place about 200 years before the events of Game of Throneswhen the Targaryen Empire reigns supreme. After the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, the family that stood at the top of the Seven Kingdoms was suddenly thrown into chaos when a dispute over his heir created warring factions.

Season 2 of House of the Dragon met with harsh criticism from fans and critics who argued that it was too focused on the key characters positioning themselves for the coming war. However, that positioning resulted in the series building a lot of tension, which is now ready to pay off.

During the final of House of the Dragon Season 2, fans saw Alicent Hightower commit to helping her former friend-turned-rival, Rhaenyra Targaryen, take King’s Landing in exchange for being able to leave with her daughter unharmed. Although it was a turn of events of immense significance, their intended truce is threatened by everything happening around them. Perhaps most notably, Aemond Targaryen’s rise to power as regent after betraying and nearly killing his own brother is a terrifying reality. The new ruler is a dragon rider who sits atop the monstrous ancient dragon Vhagar, making him a massive threat to anyone he chooses to threaten.

On the ground level, season 2 of House of the Dragon perfectly setting things up for a massive clash known as The Battle of the Gullet. When Corlys Velaryon repaired his ship, renamed it after his late wife, and set sail to join a blockade, he had no idea that a deal had been made to send a fearsome pirate to destroy him and his allies.

Another exciting part of where Season 2 left off is with a newly weaponized Daemon Targaryen. After spending the last several episodes stuck in a haunted castle, he broke free, gathered a large group of men ready to fight, and pledged his loyalty to Rhaenyra. Now he’s set on waging war against her enemies, and he looks like he’d relish the opportunity.

One of the main storylines of the second season focused on the show’s titular creatures, the dragons. After allowing the bastards to attempt to claim dragons to bloody results, Rhaenyra’s massive bet paid off as she ended the season with three new riders each claiming one.

Why ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Could Be the Series’ Biggest Yet

After the criticism of House of the Dragon Season 2 looks like the action is going to pick up a lot over the coming episodes. In a series of interviews, showrunner Ryan Condal discussed the massive stakes for what will unfold. While talking to ComicBook.com in March 2025 he talked about brings major events from George RR Martin’s books to life.

“Season 2 is huge. Season 3 is bigger in a lot of ways. From my quick count on stage, there are four big events from the book that we get to adapt and realize in three dimensions this season. It’s really exciting from a scope and scale perspective, and I think that’s the thing that the show does really well. The things that we’re building.”

More recently, in May 2026, Condal teased it House of the Dragon Season 3 starts with a bang. While talking to Weekly entertainment, he described the premiere as being wilder than anything in television history from an execution perspective. He described it as “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made.” The showrunner also told the outlet why it was so important to get the plot right by making a strong comparison.

“Trying to tell this story without doing Gullet would be like trying to film The Lord of the Rings without doing the Battle of Helms Deep. If we were going to do it, we had to do it right. And that meant dragons and ships and more theaters of conflict.”

In addition, the star of the series, Emma D’Arcy, told Weekly entertainment that viewers will finally get to see the action that the HBO series has been building towards from the start. “This time the series kicks off at 60 miles an hour. We’re finally seeing a war that’s been building for two seasons… I’m so impressed with Ryan and the team for really holding their nerve to stage a conflict that up until this point has been primarily interpersonal, familial — and then (to) finally, in a huge gesture, allow that conflict to unleash an entire class.”
