NASCAR fans climb onto the track during the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Coronado Naval Base in San Diego on June 20, 2026
For the first time in the history of the sport NASCAR is racing at an active military base this weekend Coronado Naval Base in San Diego.
As you can imagine, security was extremely tight entering the event, which consisted of a 5.5 kilometer course around the borders of the base.
However, it seems that once you found your way to the base and the event, security wasn’t exactly as tight as it could or perhaps should have been.

Fan hops off NASCAR circuit during red flag after Nasty Wreck
The final stage of Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race features driver Sam Mayer cut the interior wall in the first corner, causing him to collide with fellow driver Anthony Alfredo and then crash hard into the outside wall.
The incident led to a huge pileup of cars and also moved the retaining wall, causing the series to throw the red flag and hold back drivers on the track so workers could repair the wall.
During the red flag period, an over-enthusiastic fan decided it was a good time to try and get a VIP experience. The fan jumped over a fan and approached driver Sheldon Creed, poking his head into Creed’s window before leaving the track over the fence.
Creed then came on the radio and told his team, “I think he’s drunk. I didn’t even understand what he said.”
It is not surprising that the fan came later arrested and is probably in jail or headed there as I write this.
Surprisingly, however, this isn’t the first time this has happened during a NASCAR race. In August 2007, a fan of Watkins Glen International in New York did the the same while looking for an autograph from driver Matt Kenseth.
On the one hand, you can’t stop the crowds. But we certainly don’t recommend hitting a NASCAR track during a race, especially if it’s on a military base.
